•February 6, 2010 • 2 CommentsHad to interrup the bucolic Arboretum series with this dose of reality. Flooding hit the foothills hard this morning, damaging or destroying several homes on or near Ocean View La Canada. Nearby Sierra Madre is also evacuating some folks. Had nearly 3″ of rain and everything’s letting loose.
Here’s what happened on Canyon Crest this morning.
Flora or Fauna
•February 6, 2010 • Leave a CommentWell, I thought this was called lady’s slipper. But I went to the government site for plant identification and I wasn’t able to match this with any of the pictures I looked at. If you know which variety this is, please let the world know! Lovely little insects check into this devil of a plant lured by the water inside, but they don’t check out.
Yes, yesterday’s plant was something in the banana family. I’ll verify which “branch” next time I’m there.

•February 2, 2010 • 1 CommentA little wacky, yes? That’s the beauty of the Arboretum. There are a multitude of art installations. This is one of several fanciful spires. More to come. Here are some links to the web site and dates of upcoming tours.

Learn about the history of Rancho Santa Anita with Mitchell Hearns Bishop, Curator of the Historic Section of The Arboretum. The Arboretum’s landscape encapsulates the history of Southern California in one location, ranging from prehistory to citrus growing and ranching. In the post-war period, the founding of The Arboretum, now a world class botanic garden and historic site, made the survival of the heart of Rancho Santa Anita possible.

•February 1, 2010 • 1 CommentWe take for granted these magnificent creatures. Yes, they’ve got the worse name imaginable, and they’re loud and unexpected when one flies across the road while you’re driving. This is one of the many at the Arboretum, but we have a bevvy of them here in Altadena–right up my street–as well. I can hear them call from time to time, see one wandering the streets, or have one fly right over my car. Drove by one house and there were several sitting on the roof. It’s quite the surprise. But that’s what’s so great about Altadena. A surprise around every corner…
